Yesterday, we worked on discovering and setting our mission statement. Many of you set your very own statements for your life for the first time. Some of you clarified and refined on statements you set from the past. Some of you feedback that it’s the hardest task to date. Some of you faced blockages and resistance while doing it.

Resistances, doubts and fears that you may have experienced in Days 1-4 tasks represent things that were not explored previously. Don’t feel daunted by them; rather, understand them and why they’re there. These doubts/fears have been there all along. Running or hiding from them isn’t going to make them disappear. If you can understand them and why they’re there, you can then work through them and finally gain power over them.

Believe it or not, there are still new participants joining even today, starting with Day 1 and working from there. While we’re at Day 5 now, feel free to go back to your tasks from Day 1-4, review them and refine them further. I’ve created a 30DLBL overview page that lists all tasks to date and participants’ blogs for DLB. Continue to post your comments on previous days’ tasks too. There are new comments in Days 1/2/3 posts even today and I’m still reading/replying to them.

Comments for all 30DLBL posts/tasks will be closed when the challenge is over, so make use of this opportunity and tap into the community resources and help now while the challenge is going on. As you leave your comments/results, share your thoughts freely and engage with other participants every day in the comments, you are also leaving your own mark permanently in this big movement to live a better life at the end of the 30 days.

On other 30DLBL related news, I just found out 30DLBL is featured on Grand Forks Herald newspaper (Minnesota), thanks to reader Qin Tang who is a community blogger there. It’s fantastic and more power to us and everyone taking part!

Today is Day 5 – are you ready? Yesterday, you set your mission statement, and that helps you to be clear of what you want to make out of your life. It’s the direction and focus to move in. The next step now is to identify what you stand for, as a person. Today, we’ll be working on setting your values.

Day 5 – Identifying Your Values

Today’s task will take about an hour.

Do you know what your values are?

Values are the qualities we deem most important to us. For example, integrity, responsibility and honesty are values to most people. Diligence is a dominant value of Asian culture. Compassion is clearly a value for Mother Theresa. Success and excellence are values of achievers like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.

By setting your mission statement, it sets in place the direction to live your life to the fullest. Your values are the qualities you want to uphold so you become the best person you can ever be. For example, if your values are honesty, integrity and love, it means your best self is someone is fully honest to self and others, full of integrity (never lying, putting others down, etc) and love (showing compassion in everything you do; spreading abundance and joy). If your values are responsibility, generosity and selflessness, your best self is someone who is fully responsible, is generous with his/her emotions/actions and puts others before self.

Everyone has a set of values that subconsciously guides one in one’s everyday life – it’s a matter of whether you know them or not. The easiest way to think about your values is to think about your ideal self. What does it mean to be the best person you can be? Someone with integrity? Trustworthy? Friendly? Confident? Compassionate? Outspoken? Courageous? Kind? Inspirational? Knowledgeable? Patient? Smart? Selfless? Excellent? What qualities do you want to embody? What do you want to represent in this world?

In Discover Your Values article in The Personal Excellence Book, I wrote extensively about values and what they are. Below is an excerpt of the article.

Because your values represent what’s important to you, they are also the things that you’ll fight dearly for, at the expense of everything else. Imagine a soldier willing to die for his country in war. That’s the value of patriotism. An employee who often puts in extra hours just to get the best work done. Those are values of diligence and commitment. A parent who works hard every day so his/her family can live in abundance and happiness. Those are values of love and kinship in play.

My life values are (1) Excellence (2) Passion (3) Courage (4) Truth (5) Authenticity.

Excellence. Excellence is really the core of who I am and what I do. This is why the blog is called The Personal Excellence Blog. All of us have such immense, unlimited potential, and it’s our destiny to live truest to who we can be. To do anything less is to sell ourselves short; to deny ourselves of our true potential.

Passion. Passion represents 2 things to me. First is the things I love. Living, growing, helping others grow, being with people, connecting, being alive. I believe life is about doing things you love, not things you don’t believe in. Forcing yourself to do things you don’t like is just meaningless and empty. The second is love itself. Not just romantic love, but compassion and unconditional love. Caring for others, being cared for, seeing people care for each other, parental love, family love, lovers’ love, kinship, people love, warmth, genuinity, harmony. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside whenever I witness or experience expressions of love.

Courage. To face anything and everything that comes my way, regardless of what it is. The unconscious self’s natural reaction to fear is to avoid or shrink away. However, fear represents a part of us that is incapable of handling the situation. Hence, by facing the fear, we literally grow. Courage is choosing to face what’s before you without shrinking away, even if we may be daunted. When I choose the path of courage, I know I’m growing immediately.

Truth. I believe part of the journey of life is to discover the truth that’s out there. I don’t align myself with any particular school of thought; rather I focus on doing things myself and discovering truth for myself as I see it. To be in line with truth empowers you; to hide and deny yourself of what’s before you is to limit and disempower yourself. Only by embracing truth will we be truly free.

Authenticity. Genuinity. Being upfront and honest in your interactions with others. Being sincere and earnest in your relationships with other people. Being who you are and not hiding anything from others.

These 5 are the core values I see as the instrumental to living my best life and I strive to live true to all of them every day. There is reason behind the ordering too. #1 Excellence is the most important out of the 5 values, followed by passion, etc.

Your Task

Part 1: Identify Your Values (40 min)

Start on a new page of your 30DLBL workbook. On top, label “My Values”

Values brainstorming. When I work with my 1-1 clients, we come up with an initial list of at least 15 or more values, sometimes even 30 or more! Below are 3 helping points:

Picture your ideal self. Who is the real you? What does it mean to be your highest self, the best you in the world? What are the traits you want to embody? Write as many as possible. The more you can write, the better.

Moments of annoyance. What were the incidences when you were annoyed in the past period? Why were you annoyed? Incidences when you were annoyed/irritated/pissed off/angry are when your values were violated. For example, I hate hypocritical people because they violate one of my core values of authenticity. I also hate it when people try to skive and laze off, as it violates my value of excellence. For your incidences, what were the values that were violated that caused you to feel that way?

Moments of happiness. Were there any moments in the past period where you were extremely happy/excited/proud of yourself? Why? What was it about the situation that made you feel this way?

Pick the top 10. Once you are done, pick out the 10 most important values out of the list. You’ll find some values are similar to others. If so, just group them together and pick an adjective that best represents this set.

Choose the top 5. Now, pick the 5 most important. While all of us can have a lot of qualities we value as important, the most important is to know the top 5 values. That’s because the other values are usually represented in some way by the top 5 values. Once we live true to these 5 values, we’re in fact living true to all other qualities we hold dear. They are like the big rocks that hold everything.

Rank the 5 values in order of 1-5. This makes it clear to you what is the #1 value you want to embody, followed by #2, and so on. Congratulations; you have found your 5 core values . These are your 5 core values that will help you be the highest you in this world.

Meaning of your core values. Each core value will have its own representation and meaning. Write down what each core values represent to you. Each core value will also be an umbrella to other sub-values, so feel free to write the sub-values under them. (Refer to the values map below on what I mean)

Why 5 Values?

While all of us can have a lot of qualities we value as important, the most important is to know the top 5 values. That’s because the other values are usually represented in some way by the top 5 values. Once we live true to these 5 values, we’re in fact living true to all other qualities we hold dear. They are like the big rocks that hold everything.

Besides, trying to remember 10, 15 values makes it a jumbled process. Just focus on the 5 most important values. Even living just a little closer to them already results in dramatic changes in your quality of life.

I see these 5 values as 5 points of a star too – each essential to what you stand for. As for the star itself, that would be you of course .

Part 2: Integrating Values into Your Life (20 min)

Assess yourself on your values. On a scale of 1-10, how are you doing in each value currently? Why? How can you embody every one of your value 100% starting now?

Find an easy way to remember the values. Your values are you, so you should be able to readily remember them no matter where you are. One thing I did was pick the first letter of each value to create a 5-letter acronym. After that, I would use it as the proxy to recall my values.

Recite your values daily. As you start your day, recite your values. Do it throughout the day as well, till you can remember your values by heart. When I first started I would recite my values once every hour. Then I’ll recall what each value stands for to me, whether I’m living to it 101% and how I embody it even more. Today, my values are a natural part of who I am and I know them off my head, so there’s no need for me to recite them anymore.

Live true to your values. Picture yourself embodying these 5 values 100% all the time. As someone who embodies these 5 values, what will you do? How will you behave? What will you say? What can you do to align myself even more to my values? Be true to them.

Use your values as a compass. Whenever you are in a fix, use your values as your guide on what to do. What is the decision that is most aligned to your values? What action should you take that best matches your values?

Add to your vision board. Now that you’ve created your values, add it to your vision board, below your mission statement. You can also find new pictures that represent these 5 values to add to the board . Check out participant Kate’s values map below:

Review your values regularly. Once every 3 months will be great. Check to ensure these values represent the best person you want to be.

Day 5 of Your 30 Day Action Plan

Refer to the 30DLBL actions you set for Day 5 and perform them with excellence today. How has your progress from Days 1-4 been? Is there anything that’s lagging behind? Can you get any of them in place today? How can you rearrange your upcoming week such that you can get them done? Since it’s the weekend now, take the chance to regroup and get on any backlog that may have piled up from the previous week.

Share Your Values

Share your values in the comments area with others. What are your 5 core values? Why did you pick them? What does each of them represent? What are going to do to live in fullest alignment with the values? Share them to everyone and to the world out there!

When you are done, move on to Day 6, which is…

Image © Shutterstock, D Sharon Pruitt

Yesterday we created our vision boards – capturing our vision of what it takes to live our ideal life into clear imagery . Many participants have shared their amazing boards! Check them out in Day 3′s post and the comments. Some of you might still be working on improving your boards. Do share your board in Day 3′s comments, even as a draft! As I mentioned in Day 3′s post, our vision board is not a one-off creation – it’s an ongoing process. As we change/grow over time, our goals will change too (when we achieve them; when our priorities change), so make sure your board houses your most updated vision.

If you’ve been reading #30DLBL tweets, the community energy is fantastic. Whether you’re actively commenting, blogging or quietly taking part as a passive participant, I’m feeling your energy from wherever you are in the world. All of your passion, love, zest, enthusiasm is bursting through my screen Some of you are replying to each others’ comments, which is great! Join in – it’s great to share (think “Contribution” category in the Life Wheel) and all of us can learn too. And to the shyer participants, feel free to join in and post a comment or two on how things are going for you. This forum is for all of us – even if you don’t have much to say, just sharing 1-2 lines is a clarifying process itself. Check out ongoing discussions: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

I’ve also updated Day 2′s write-up to make it easier for you to get into the state of finding your ideal life.

Today is Day 4 – Are you ready for it? In Day 1, you assessed your life with the life wheel. Day 2, you envisioned your ideal life. Yesterday, you brought your vision to life with your vision board. Today, we’ll be working on creating your mission statement.

Day 4 – Creating Your Mission Statement

Today’s task will take about 2 hours.

A mission statement is a statement that states your objective of life. It’s meant to be concise and to the point, so it’s usually just a few lines long. You might have heard about companies having mission statements, and it’s the same concept applied to our life. [ Read my 2009 classic: You are the CEO of your life ]

Personally, I see having a mission statement (or life purpose) is the #1 step towards living your life to the fullest. In fact, creating a mission statement is one of the things I work with my 1-1 life coaching clients in creating their best life. That’s because it answers the very fundamental question of what you live for and why you’re here. Think of your mission statement as the direction of the compass, and the goals you want to achieve as the destinations. When you’re clear of your direction, it helps you become focused in everything, from your long-term goals, to your daily actions.

For example, after I set my mission statement in 2006, I immediately had a reference point on how exactly to live my life. My mission today is (as refined over the years):

“To unite the world as one single consciousness; To touch others’ lives, help them achieve their highest potential and embrace their best lives.”

“To achieve my highest potential and live my best life; To live consciously and freely in truth, love and power.”

At that point when I identified the statement, it was like there was a compass planted in me. Suddenly, I could see what were the paths that would help me live my best life, and what were the paths that wouldn’t. I realized the path I was going in (my corporate career) wasn’t going to bring me to where I want to be, and continuing down that line would move me away from my vision. While it wasn’t like I quit my job immediately, it set in place the intention and mental plans to depart a few years later.

On a micro-level, knowing my mission statement enabled me to get the maximum out of my day-to-day life. Suddenly, there was crystal clear clarity on the things I should do or not; and decisions to make. Before I take on any activity or engagement, I would ask myself “Does this help me live in alignment with my mission? Or is there something else I can do which will help me achieve that better?” If the answer is positive, I’ll take it on. If the answer is negative, I’ll say no. Within the context of an activity/project, I’ll ask myself “What can I do that will help me live truest to my mission?” And I’ll take on those actions.

If I hadn’t identified my mission statement then, I would never have the same level of clarity and focus I have today. Everything I’ve undertaken since the day I set my mission statement in 2006 has been a conscious action in alignment with my mission. For example, after creating my mission in 2006, I knew that the best way to live 100% to my mission is to eventually run a personal development business. It was how I came to set up TPEB and TSOPE, both of which have the same mission as my life mission.

When you have clarity on what you want to achieve, that’s when you can arrange everything around to be congruent with your inner self. You’ll be able to select a career (or create a business) that is aligned with your mission. You’ll be in relationships that match what you want. You’ll take on projects and actions that are in accordance with what you want. It’s the start towards living a life of your highest alignment.

Some may have an inking on what you want to achieve in your life, what you want to make out of your life, but never pinned it down into a statement. I’ve written extensively on how to discover one’s purpose/mission in the How To Discover Your Real Purpose series (You can also download the ebook version for free in the ebooks section. Today’s task is to identify that statement, and crystallize into words. For those who have already identified your mission statement previously, this is a great chance to review the statement and update it.

The Task

Part 1: Setting Your Mission

“Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life… Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated. Thus, everyone’s task is as unique as is his specific opportunity to implement it.” – Viktor Frankl

“Your work is to discover your work and then, with all your heart, to give yourself to it.” – Buddha

Start on a new page in your 30DLBL workbook. On top, write “My Life Purpose”

Read 6 Things to Consider Before Identifying Your Purpose so you know what to look for as you set your purpose/mission.

Read How To Discover Your Real Purpose in 30 Minutes. Follow Step # 1 in the article to find your purpose.

Pay special attention to “10 Important Things To Note“. These are based on most common questions I receive regarding the purpose exercise which you will likely encounter when doing the exercise too.

After you get your deepest answer, then follow Step # 2 in the article to refine your mission statement.

While you are given a day for this task (as well as others), things like defining your ideal life, creating your vision board and setting your mission statement are all ongoing processes, to be refined over time, and to be renewed as you grow and evolve. 30DLBL is merely a start; a trigger point to get you thinking about these things, things which you normally don’t do on a regular day. It is a platform for you to apply concepts, theories that you may have read at TPEB earlier or self-help books, but never really applied them.

Don’t feel frustrated if you can’t seem to find an answer. Simply see this as the cue to start thinking about what you want to set as your mission statement in life. Create an initial idea/draft, then work it out in ongoing days. This is meant to be a question you think over on an ongoing basis. It’s a starting point for many more great things to come.

Some participants took a longer time to craft their mission statement and ended up pausing all other days’ task for this, which subsequently derailed their 30DLBL plan. Don’t do that. It’s okay to have a draft for this, most participants did that. It’s okay to work on other Days’ tasks in parallel; they’re not directly dependent. In fact, some of the participants got new answers to previous days’ tasks as they work on the later tasks. Growth isn’t a linear; it’s multi-dimensional and comes in all shapes and sizes.

Part 2: Bringing Your Mission To Life

With the current mission statement you created,

Add to your vision board. Put it at the top of your board so you see it immediately and rearrange your pictures around it.

Recite your statement throughout the day. Every day as you start your day, review your mission statement. Remember why you’re here and what you’re here to do. Feel that same energy you had when you first created the statement. Ask yourself what you can do today to live truest to your statement today and moving forward.

Live in alignment with your mission. Use your mission statement as your reference point with everything you face. Ask yourself if what you’re doing now helps you to live true to your statement, or if there are other, better things you can do. With every situation you’re in, ask what is the manner to act to live fullest to your mission. Do a personal check regularly if you’re being 110% true to your statement. Read Living in Alignment with Your Purpose

Review your mission. Have a regular 3/6/12 month review on your mission statement. Does it resonate with you 110% now? If not, see if it’s time to tweak/refresh the statement.

Day 4 of Your 30 Day Action Plan

Refer to the 30DLBL actions you set for Day 4 and perform them with excellence today. It’s the weekend now so take the chance to regroup and get on any backlog that may have piled up from the previous week.

Participant Karissa brought up a great comment on the 30 Day tasks - what if things go off track? Should we reschedule and get it back on track, or should we let go? My answer is: It depends on how important the goal is, and how important the task is in achieving the goal. If it’s important, prioritize and stick to it; else see if there’s another way to work around it. Be sure to check out Put First Things First on prioritizing your tasks.

Share Your Mission Statement!

What’s the mission statement you have created? What is the statement that will enable you to live your life to the fullest? Share with others! If you need any help in creating your statement, or you have a draft version, do share too. I’ll reply and help the best I can. We’re all here to enable each other along.

Once you are done, move on to Day 5, which is…

Yesterday you designed your ideal life. It was an amazing experience as I read your visions in the comments and your 30DLBL Day 2 entries (more here, and here, and here). I could feel each and everyone of you were genuinely connected with your higher self as you share your goals and dreams.

Several participants shared that they cried when doing Day 1 / 2 tasks, and when I saw that I was really, sincerely and deeply moved myself. You know why? Because crying is one of the key signs that tells you that you’re connected with your highest self. To cry is to be connected with your inner soul, that part of you that you have stashed away in the past. In my 1-1 coaching with clients, it is the times when their tears flow, when they connect deep inside, when they let their true souls sing, that they break through and move to the next level in their discovery and growth.

If you cried or you were almost moved to tears doing the past exercises, ask yourself “Why am I crying/tearing? Why am I experiencing these tears? What is this that I’m feeling? Why am I feeling this way? What am I trying to tell myself?” Speak to your inner self. The thing is you’ve been so busy with your external life that you forgot about your inner self. Reconnect with him/her and don’t ever lose touch. It is connection with your inner self and your emotions that make you come alive as a person, not anything else.

For those of you who experienced resistance/fear with the exercise, understand the resistance and why it’s there. The resistance is merely a first level defense. Work your way through it to get to your real answers. As you do so, new emotions will pour in – emotions you didn’t know were there. When that happens, observe them, understand why they’re there, and in the process understand yourself.

Quick Pointers

So today is Day 3, and we now officially have over 1,000 participants for 30DLBL . A big welcome to those who just joined! Newcomers can still sign up here and start working on Day 1′s task right away. Here’s the latest list of tasks to date.

If you’re lagging behind with the tasks, don’t worry. Simply catch up the next day. Split the task into different phases, and work out time pockets to do them. Get some quiet time in the night to yourself so you can work on it. Reschedule unimportant Q3/Q4 tasks so you can work on this important Q2 activity.

If any of you are facing any problems, post in the respective day’s comments and let us know. For participants who are moving ahead, do check out the comments and reply/help readers where you can. Remember we’re here in this together and we’re here for one another.

Yesterday I provided a clue to today’s task – “AS ROBIN VOID” (an anagram). Some of you have correctly guessed what it is – “AS ROBIN VOID” is an anagram for “Vision board“, and that’s the topic for Day 3.

Day 3 – Creating Your Vision Board

Today’s task will take about 1.5 – 2 hours.

What exactly is a vision board? Vision board is a board, put it simply, is a board of your ideal life vision . It’s typically a corkboard with images of your goals, dreams and visions for the future . Some people also put their mission statement, their values, daily affirmations and inspirational quotes on their board.

Our focus today is to create your vision board, based on your ideal life in Day 2.

4 Key Reasons To Have Your Vision Board

It’s a visual representation of your goals. Visual imagery is very important when it comes to goal setting. Most people see goals as something to be created in physical reality, but the truth is for every goal to take place, it has to first occur in your mind. After all, if you don’t even have a mental picture, how are you going to achieve this in real life? To achieve this in real life, you have to first know how it looks like and feels like, on a sensory level. Your vision board is a tool to convey those emotions to yourself. The more you can crystallize the images and articulate your goals, the better!

Pictures speak a thousand words. While you can have lengthy lists of goals and plans, pictures are able to trigger that right emotion and state in a way that words can’t. For example, if you aspire to have a trim and athletic figure, images of celebrities/models/athletes probably trigger more powerful emotions than paragraphs of text.

It’s an immediate reminder of your goals. Without a proper focal point, it’s easy to be washed away by daily mundanes, to forget your own goals and to channel energy towards others’ goals instead. Your vision board is here to remind you of your vision and your truest goals. See it as a friendly nudge in the right direction towards your ideal life.

It drives you towards your best life. Your vision board can be a very powerful tool in goal achievement. Simply looking at your vision board for just 1-2 minutes has the power to shift your state and drive you to take action on your goals. Whenever I look at my own board, I immediately remember my goals and feel charged up towards them. In fact today, these goals are already 2nd nature to me as I live my best life.

For your vision board, I recommend you use a physical corkboard with images of your biggest goals and your aspirations mounted on it. If you have no boards to mount the images on, you can put them on the walls in your room! Since many of us spend so much time at the computer, I recommend you have a soft copy version of your board, saved in an excel workbook, word document or photoshop file. Save them as a jpeg, then set it as your wallpaper. This way, you see it every time you visit your desktop

For me, I have 1 official vision board (corkboard), 1 unofficial one (images placed over my larger noticeboard) and 2 soft copy vision boards (in excel – 1 for my overall life and 1 for my personal development work), and they really a great way to reinforce my goals. I see them throughout the day that they’ve become second nature to me.

A peek at my vision board…

I’ve selected several sections of my vision board to share with you:

Being covered by international media for my personal work, including Forbes, New York Times, Business Week, Time, Wall Street Journal, TV media coverage, etc, and reaching out to even more people. I set this goal last year and earlier this year I was covered by CNN International, so that’s one step forward in this goal. If you are clear on your vision and you pursue it relentlessly, the universe will step in to give you a nudge forward.

Update Sep 4 - Just found out 30DLBL has been featured in Grand Sparks Herald newspaper (Minnesota)! Sweet

Have my nation-wide talkshow, which will enable me to reach out to even more people, touch their lives and help them achieve their highest potential and live their best lives, hence living to my purpose even fully. That’s Oprah, Ellen and Tyra above in their own talkshows and I find them to be incredible, inspiring women in their own right

My dream campus for TSOPE (The School of Personal Excellence, my training school). This is the image of Xavier School from X-Men (movies).

Benjamin’s board

Now that you’ve seen others’ boards, it’s time to create your very own board! If you already have a vision board of some sort, take this chance to update your board! Your vision board should house your highest vision of what it takes to live your best life. Our goals change over time (as we achieve them or as our priorities change), so if you created it a few months/years ago, perhaps it’s time to give your board a refresh.

Your Task

Create Your Vision Board

Get your corkboard and thumbtacks ready! If you’re making your vision board in soft copy, you can create in Picasa, Photoshop, MS Powerpoint or Word. I recommend having both a soft copy and hard copy for your vision board.

Review. Take a few minutes to review the ideal life you wrote down yesterday. Recall when you wrote this yesterday. Visualize how your ideal life looks like as best as you can, on all 5 senses.

Search. Get on the web and find pictures that best match your vision (Google Images and Flickr are good places to start)! A great suggestion from participant Stacy is to pick out images from magazines if you don’t have a printer. Some pointers:

Focus on end outcomes for pictures. For example if you have a vision to be thin and athletic, having pictures of trim and fit people is more empowering than the picture of someone running.

Look for images that trigger the right emotions. This process might take a while depending on the images that come up – I know this takes me quite some time. Whatever it is, don’t rush through this! Find the right pictures that convey your desired emotion and mental image.

Get as many images as you can. Make sure your biggest goals are represented, along with your immediate goals. Don’t leave any stone unturned!

As a bonus, think about people/leaders/famous people who inspire you. Get their images and include them on your board.

Decorate. After you are done, collate the pictures. Print them out, cut them and arrange them on your corkboard.

Allocate the most space to most important goals. Use the remaining space for the rest.

More important goals should take center placements on the board.

Share with others! Take a picture of your board, upload it to Photo Bucket or Facebook and share it in the comments!

After Creating Your Board…

Put this up in a place you will see every day. Choose a strategic location where you will be at majority of the time. Have the physical board mounted in your #1 spot you’re at all the time, which is probably your work/study desk. Then, print out copies of your board and place it everywhere, such as on your fridge, beside the mirror in your toilet, on the walls in your room, in your work folders. Have the soft copy and save it as your desktop wallpaper and in your mobile wallpaper too. You get the drift! Your vision board should basically be everywhere around you.

Review it daily. Schedule at least 10 minutes at the start of every day in your calendar to look at your vision board. Reconnect with your state when you first identified this ideal life. Recall why you want these goals. Visualize yourself achieving these goals. Imagine how you’ll feel. Then, capture and hold on to this state as you continue on your daily tasks.

Continue Your 30 Day Action Plan

Refer to the 30DLBL actions you set for Day 3 and perform them with excellence today. Look at Day 4 and prepare to accomplish them the night of Day 3.

Share Your Vision Board!

How does your vision board look like? What images have you selected? How do you like your vision board? Are there more things to add on? Can you make it even better, richer, even more energizing?

Share your board with others in the comments area! Take pictures, upload them to Facebook / Photo Bucket and share them below I love this exercise because it’s fun to see all the different boards everyone creates! At the same time, it’s extremely inspiring to get to see each others’ biggest goals and dreams and know what makes us come alive

Once you are done, move on to Day 4, which is…

We started Day 1 with life wheel assessment. It was absolutely amazing reading your responses and Twitter updates. Many of you got powerful insights doing the exercise which is fantastic! The exercise is meant to drive clarity on how you’re doing in life – and now you have a clear picture, work on maximizing your life, starting with this month (hence the 30 days action plan). Stick true to your 30 days action plan and make this your best month ever.

As I read the incoming new tweets on #30DLBL from participants and responses, I feel very honored to experience this journey with you. I am very impressed with the dedication you have put in towards living a better life. Several participants mentioned spending 2 hours (or even more) on the exercise; many participants have been blogging about their 30DLBL Day 1 tasks and journeys, including participant Shuwei who specially set up a 30DLBL blog for this purpose!

While this is framed a 30 day challenge, know that it’s really more than that. Ultimately it’s about you. It’s about your life. The attention you’re putting into this means you’ll reap even more rewards for yourself and your life too, for the 30 days and even long after that.

On another positive note, we have reached over 1,000 comments for our 30DLBL announcement post and over 900 sign ups! We even have a couple of husband/wife teams and participant Catherine who is engaging it as a family level project . A number of readers shared that they weren’t planning to join/just wanted to do this passively, then eventually jumped fully onboard after they got into Day 1′s task . In just a few hours, we’ll be hitting over 1,000 participants We’ve hit over 1,000 participants! Sign-ups will remain open for a couple more days for new visitors, as well as those who decide to join mid-way.

Without further ado, let’s now move to Day 2′s task.

Day 2 – Your Ideal Life

Today’s task will take about 1.5 hours.

“Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions.” ~ Albert Einstein

“Everything you want should be yours: the type of work you want; the relationships you need; the social, mental, and aesthetic stimulation that will make you happy and fulfilled; the money you require for the lifestyle that is appropriate to you; and any requirement that you may (or may not) have for achievement or service to others. If you don’t aim for it all, you’ll never get it all. To aim for it requires that you know what you want” ~ Richard Koch (101 Inspiring Quotes of All Time)

Do you remember when you were a little boy/girl? What would you think about? What were your biggest wishes and dreams? What were your aspirations? What did you want to be when you grow up? What did you want to achieve?

For many of us, childhood was a time when we would think about whatever we want. We were free to dream, to imagine, to visualize. We could be whoever we want. We could be Superman, Batman or Spiderman, and no one would tell us that we were crazy. We could set to be the richest person in the world, with all the supplies of ice cream and candy that we would ever want, and it was okay. We could want to be the president, and we would be praised for having such goals.

But somehow along the way, as we were growing up, things changed. Suddenly, certain goals would become labeled as “crazy” by others, and people who think that way would be seen as fools. Suddenly, certain thoughts or goals would be seen as not being “practical” or “realistic”, even though these are really our truest hearts’ desires. Suddenly, it was “wrong” to think/do this and that, and only certain goals were seen as “correct” or “appropriate”

Because of that, we began to think in limitations, rather than possibilities. We stopped thinking about what we want, things that make us come alive 200%. We start to live our lives in autopilot mode, so that we could get by every day. As a result, our ideals, our real self, became stashed to a corner. We forgot who we truly are. We forgot what are the things that make us come alive.

What if all our dreams are actually possible? What if everything is within your reach all along, and it’s a matter of first envisioning it then taking action to make it happen? How would you feel? What would you want to be? What would you want to do? Who would you want to be?

And it is possible. Everything that you’ve ever hoped and wanted is all possible. It’s all a matter of taking the right steps to achieve them, and to do so you have to first be consciously thinking about them. To live your truest, best life, you’ve to first identify your biggest wishes, goals and dreams; things that excite you, that make you come to life, that make you feel like you’re born on a whole new level.

Day 1′s task was about getting clarity and being aware. Day 2 is about possibilities, dreams, your wishes, your ideals, your deepest hopes and desires, your truest passions in life.

For today’s task, you’ll be designing your ideal life.

Your Task

Envision Your Ideal Life

Do this exercise when you’re alone and not going to be interrupted by anymore. You need the quiet, alone time.

Start on a fresh page in your 30DLBL workbook for Day 2. On top of it, write “My Ideal Life”

Envision your ideal life. For the next hour (or more), I want you to seriously answer this question:

What would you do if you can never, ever fail? What would you do if you have unlimited resources, time or networks? What are your biggest goals and dreams? What would you want to achieve in your life? What is your ideal life? What is a life you can look back and be proud of living, and tell yourself “I’ve truly lived to my fullest?”

Be bold; Write everything you want.

You know how you get a menu whenever you go to a restaurant, and then whatever you’ll basically get the food that you order on the menu? See this paper as the menu of the God/highest power that you’re aware of, where whatever you write on it will come true. Write as much as you need to; 4 pages, 6 pages, or even more than 10 pages!! This should be a life where you’ll score >10/10 and >10/10 on each category of your life wheel too.

As a small example, in my ideal life which I’ve set since 2008 (since before I started TPEB), TPEB reaches millions of readers every day; I’ve my very own international talkshow; I have books that are in top international best sellers’ lists; I run a full school campus for TSOPE which is my training business; (think Xavier school from X-Men); I’m on the cover of top magazines like Forbes/Times/Business Week/etc; I speak to hundreds and thousands of people in conferences/seminars; I have a private jet and much more. And this is but a fraction of my ideal life.

How about you? What’s yours? Be bold, be audacious, be free, be truly you. Be as specific as possible; the more specific it is, the more the universe will be able to bring this to you. Write everything that comes to mind. Even little details, nuances are relevant.

Your answers should cover all categories in your life wheel.

Business / Career / Studies – What are you doing? What achievements and results do you want to create? How big is your business/career? (If you’ve a business, will it be international?)

Finance/Wealth – How much money will you be earning? What property do you live in? What material possessions will you have?

Health/Fitness – How is your fitness level? How do you look? What is your diet like? How is your health?

Social/Friends – How is your social circle like? What are the kind of friends you are with?

Family – What are you doing with your family? How often do you meet them?

Romance/Love – (if you’re single) What is your ideal partner? How is he/she like? What do you love about him/her? Do you have kids? How many? How are they like?

Recreation – What do you do for recreation? What hobbies do you want to pursue?

Contribution – What will you be doing socially? How will you be giving back to the world / helping others?

Personal Growth – How will you be pursuing your personal growth? What will you be learning, growing?

Spiritual – How connected will you be with the world? How will you be pursuing your spiritual interests?

Your ideal life should meet your 4 core needs. For more details, read the exercise I wrote in an earlier article.

Body (physical needs)

Mind (mental needs)

Heart (emotional needs)

Soul (spiritual needs)

After you are done, look back and review what you have written. For the rest of the day, continue to think about what you want in your ideal life, and probe deeper. Fill in if there are new things that come to mind. Add more whenever you want to – this is to be dynamically updated and isn’t supposed to end here. While I’ve set an hour for this exercise, really it’s an exercise to think over and write about for the whole day.

Congratulations, you’ve just created your ideal life , and this is the start towards moving there. We’ll be referring back to this in our later 30DLBL exercises.

Day 2 of Your 30 Day Action Plan

What have you planned for Day 2? Do them with excellence today. Record your results and reflections in your 30DLBL workbook.

Share Your Day 2 Results

Share your results on your ideal life in the comments . By sharing it openly, you’re also reinforcing it to yourself. For those of you blogging about 30DLBL, feel free to share your results and links in the comments area!

While I’m reading every comment and replying where I can, this challenge really involves all of us. We’re all here together in this and to support each other. So feel free to read each others’ responses and reply to one another! Encourage, egg other participants along. If you have some thoughts to share about a participant’ answer/response/question, simply reply! Let’s all share openly. Helping others is also helping yourself too. The more we share, the more we learn, the more we grow.

Preparation For Day 3

In preparation for Day 3′s task, you’ll need

A corkboard (with surface area as big as four A4 papers put together)

A box of thumbtacks (because the ones that come with the corkboard aren’t enough)

Colored printer ink if your printer is running low on colors

If you don’t have any of the above, you can get them at any regular bookstore. If you don’t have a printer, then there’s no need to get the 3 items (you’ll still be able to take part in Day 3′s task, don’t worry).

If you’re wondering what exactly we’re doing tomorrow, here’s a clue – “AS ROBIN VOID” (it’s an anagram).

Once you are done, move on to Day 3, which is…

Image ©

“Live A Better Life in 30 Days” Challenge

So what exactly is this about? Previously I’ve been alluding to this challenge in Facebook/Twitter, as well as in the previous article 101 Ways To Live Your Best Life, and have been receiving many interested responses.

What’s going to happen: For the entire month of September (30 days), I’ll be conducting a 30 days Challenge To Live A Better Life (30D LBL). What’s going to happen is I’ll share a task every day on the blog, a task which will move you towards living a better life. The task can be something small, from a self-reflection question/exercise, to trying out a new habit, to a bigger scale activity that requires you to get out there and do something (it’ll be real fun too – no gimmicky stuff, don’t worry. I hate gimmicks myself). These are not random tasks assigned for the sake of doing them – They embody the principles I share here at the blog to live your best life. Each task has been specifically created to drive you on the path of self-discovery, conscious living and personal growth. I have personally designed/set each of task and have also done them myself, so I know they have their intended effect.

I’ll unveil the activity every morning, 6am Singapore time (GMT +8) at the blog. Your focus for the day is to do that specific task for the day, and share your results in the comments area of that day’s post. That means at the end of 30 days, you would have done 30 tasks. The tasks have been set in a specific order to deliver the end objective, so it’s important you do them in that sequence.

The end goal at the end of 30 days is for you to emerge a better, more aware and conscious person living a better life compared to 30 days ago.

Daily Outline for 30 Days ahead

Morning, 6am: I’ll post the day’s task 6pm Singapore time (GMT +8, Greenwich Mean Time. Refer to The World Clock on time differences between SG and your country) here at the blog. I recommend you to read in the morning. Why? Morning is when you start the day and no better way then to start off with a focus on what to do. Also, when you read it in the morning, you have the rest of the day to think over it/do it. SG timing is ahead of most of the world, so the task should be online during morning your time. Join the free newsletter to get the mail delivered in your inbox every day (GMT +8, 10pm).

The Task: I’ll share (a) What the task is about (b) Instructions on how to do it. I’ll also be sharing additional documents applicable. Each day, there will be a journal template where you can fill in your thoughts/insights/reflections.

What you have to do: Your focus for the day is to do that task. Don’t put it off to the next day or think of accumulating the tasks to finish in a day. Simply stick to 1 task a day. Each task can take from 15-45 minutes, though if you want you are free to spend more time on it too (the more time you spend, the higher the results you’ll get!) I recommend you put aside an hour every day so you’ll get quality output. Some readers mentioned they spent 2 hours on each task, but that’s purely at your own choice. If you’re willing to invest more time, you’ll gain more.

At the end of the day: Share your experience in the comments area for that task. Also write down your thoughts/insights/reflections in the daily journal template that will be provided. This means at the end of 30 days, you’ll have 30 insights to look back on.

Join “Live A Better Life in 30 Days” Challenge

#30DLBL Hashtag for Twitter Users

It’s going to be an exciting 30 days ahead, and while each task in the 30 days is an activity that can be done independently, it’s always better when we have user support. It’s fun to see what each other is doing and egg/support everyone in this challenge along. The power of a group acting in synchronicity together isn’t to be underestimated.

For this purpose, I’ve created a twitter hashtag of #30DLBL (30 Days Live a Better Life) for participants who have Twitter accounts. Click on the link and you’ll see the latest results of people tweeting with that tag. You can also subscribe to the feed so you’ll be updated when there’s a new tweet with #30DLBL.

Whenever you’re tweeting about something related to the challenge, simply type in #30DLBL in the same message as your tweet. Feel free to tweet about your daily progress via this hashtag. I’ve started to do that an hour ago and other twitters are following on now. This is not just a challenge now – it has become a movement to change our lives for the better! On this note, I implore all of you to help tweet/share about this challenge out to everyone out there whom you want to live a better life. This is a rare opportunity to have such a challenge, so let’s get everyone we know onboard! #30DLBL

“Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drown your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs (101 Most Inspiring Quotes of All Time)

How do you feel about your life today? Are you living every day in exuberance? Do you love what you’re doing? Are you excited every single moment? Are you looking forward to what’s coming up next? Are you living your best life?

If your answer to any of the above is a no, maybe or not sure, that means you’re not living your life to the fullest. Which really shouldn’t be the case, because your life experience is up to you to create. Why settle for anything less than what you can get? You deserve nothing but the best. In the past years of my life, especially since after I pursued my passion in ’08, I’ve been living every day to the fullest, filled with joy, passion and rigor. It’s an amazing experience that I want you to experience that too.

This is a list of 101 timeless principles I use to live my best life, and I hope they’ll help you to do so too. As you live in alignment with them, you’ll find yourself becoming more conscious, more alive, and more importantly, experiencing life on a whole new level. Be sure to bookmark or even print out this page and refer to it daily to guide you to your best life.

Here are 101 ways to live your life to the fullest:

Live every day on a fresh new start. Don’t be held back by what happened yesterday, the day before, the week before, the year before, and so on.

Image ©

Be true to who you are. Stop trying to please other people or be someone else. It’s better to be an original version of yourself than an exact duplicate of someone else.

Quit complaining. Don’t be like the howling dog, always howling and never doing anything. Stop complaining about your problems and work on them instead.

Be proactive. Stop waiting for others around you to do something and take action yourself instead.

Rather than think “what if”, think “next time”. Don’t think about things you can’t change (namely what has happened and thoughts of other people) or unhappy things because these are disempowering. Instead focus on the things you can action upon. That’s the most constructive thing you can do in any situation.

Focus on WHAT vs. How. Focus on WHAT you want first, before you think about HOW to do it. Anything is possible, as long as you set your mind, heart and soul to it.

Create your own opportunities. You can wait for opportunities to drop in life. Or, you can go out there and create your own opportunities. The latter is definite and much more empowering.

Live more consciously each day. Stop sleepwalking through life. Your life is something to be experienced, not coasted through.

Be committed to your growth. In the Map of Consciousness, there are 17 levels of consciousness – from Shame to Enlightenment. The higher level of consciousness you are in, the richer your life experience. Achieving higher consciousness comes from your commitment to growth.

Know your inner self. This means knowing who you are and what you represent. Be clear of your personal identity.

Image ©

Discover your real life purpose. Set the mission statement for your life; one that will drive you to life your life to the fullest.

Live in alignment with your purpose. What can you start doing immediately that will let you live 100% in alignment with your purpose? How can you live true to your purpose within every context/situation/environment you are in, every second of the day?

Set your life commandments. Define your personal commandments to live your best life. What adages and principles do you want to follow in your life?

Discover your values. Values are the essence of what makes you, you. Read article #11: Discover Your Values in The Personal Excellence Book on the importance of values, my values and how you can create your own.

Hold yourself to the highest conduct. Every one of us have our own set of ethics, principles and moral codes. Live true to them every day. Also, live in full alignment with your purpose (#11), commandments (#13) and values (#14).

Design your ideal life. What is your ideal life? Design it. First, assess your life at the moment via the life wheel. Then, ask yourself what it takes to live a 10/10 life (in all 10 areas – career, health, love, social, etc…). What is the life that will make you the best person you can ever be? Set your BHAGs – big, hairy and audacious goals! There are no limits in life – only those you set for yourself!

Stop putting life on hold. Are you putting any parts of your life on hold? What is one area of your life you have been putting off/avoiding/denying? Uncover it and start working on it.

Create your life handbook. Your life handbook is your life-long personal manual to live your best life – from your mission statement, your values, your long-term goals, short-term goals, personal strengths, blind spots to address, plans, among others. Create your book first then build on from there.

Set your goals. After you design your ideal life, set your 5-year, 3-year and 1-year goals. The more specific your goals, the better! Read the 10 principles on how to get winning goals.

Image ©

Take action on your goals and dreams. Create an action plan with your strategy, plan and immediate next steps. ESPER: 7-part Goal Achievement series is a great tool to get you started.

Create your bucket list, i.e. things to do before you die. Then, get out to achieve them.

Don’t do things for the sake of doing them. Always evaluate what you’re doing and only do it if there is meaning behind them. Don’t be afraid to quit the things that don’t serve your path.

Do the things you love, because life is too precious to spend it doing anything else. If you don’t enjoy something, then don’t do it. Spend your time and energy on things that bring you fulfillment and happiness.

Discover your passion in life. What sets you on fire? Go out there (and explore inward) to know what you love to do.

Make your passion a full-fledged career. Then, start pursuing it. Stop working in a job you are passionless towards. Quit your job when you are ready to do it full-time.

Turn your passion into a huge success. Turn your passion into a multi-million dollar business. Better yet, make it a multi-billion dollar one.

Learn from criticism. Be open to criticism but don’t be affected by it. Criticism is meant to help you be a better person. Learn from it.

Be positive. Is the glass half empty or half full? How about neither? It’s actually all-full – the bottom half is water, the top half is air. It’s all a matter of perception. Take on empowering perceptions, not those that bind you. If you can see the positive sides of every thing, you’ll be able to live a much richer life than others.

Image ©

Do unto others what you would like others to do unto you. The law of reciprocity – Golden Rule

Don’t complain or badmouth about other people.

Be empathetic. If everyone only see life from his/her own perspective, we’ll forever be close-minded and insular. See things from others’ shoes.

Be a compassionate person. Show compassion and kindness to everyone around you

Develop 100% self-belief. Believe in yourself and your abilities. If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect others to believe in you?

Let go of unhappy past. This means past grievances, heartbreaks, sadness, disappointments, etc.

Forgive those who may have done you wrong in the past. “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and realize it was you.” – Lewis B. Smedes

Let go of attachments. Don’t fixate yourself with a certain status, fame, wealth or material possessions. These are impermanent and will ultimately disappear one day when you die. Focus on growing and living life to the fullest instead.

Let go of relationships that do not serve you. That means negative people, dishonest people, people who don’t respect you, people who make you feel bad about yourself and relationships that prevent you from growing.

Spend more time with people who enable you. Hang out with people who you compatible with, like-minded people, people who are positive, successful, strong achievers and positive for your growth. You are after all the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

Image ©

Build genuine, authentic connections with people around you – strangers, friends, family, colleagues, business partners, customers/clients, etc. Spend more time to know them better and foster stronger connections.

Connect with an old friend. There is no end to the number of friends you can have. Reach out to people from the past.

Do a kind deed a day. What is something you can do today that will make the world a better place? Go and do it.

Help other people who are in need. Voluntarism is one outlet. You can also start with your friends and family.

Help people when they least expect it, without reason. You don’t need any reason to help others. Do it because you want to. Share the love with everyone.

Go dating (if you’re single).

Fall in love ♥

Review your life. Set a weekly review session to assess how you are doing for your goals and your life. Review your purpose once every 3-6 months too so you know you’re on the right path.

Overcome procrastination. Procrastination is a huge waste of your time (and your life). Get rid of it once and for all.

30 minutes a day. Set aside at least 30 minutes every day to work on a quadrant 2 goal that, when you achieve it, will bring about the biggest source of fulfillment and happiness in your life

Get out there and make new friends – whether in your workplace, online, friends’ friends, social groups, etc.

Be your advisor (from the future). Imagine you’re the future you, 5 years later. How would you advise yourself? Write it down. Now, apply them. Check out a related article #17: Future Prediction Exercise in The Personal Excellence Book, which is about predicting your future then learning from it.

Write a letter to your future self. Actually, write 3 letters – for yourself in 1, 3 and 5 years. The longer the letters, the better. Envision how you’ll be like in the future. Make each letter a minimum 2 pages long. Now, seal them and put them in a safe place. Set it in your calendar so you’ll know to open them when it’s time. This will inspire you to work your hardest and achieve your maximum results in the time period.

Image ©

Declutter. Start from your computer, then your table, your room, your bag/wallet, and your home. The more you throw the unwanted and old stuff away, the more room you’re creating for new things to enter.

Keep learning. There is something to learn from everything you see, hear and experience. This includes your mistakes and past misshaps (if any). Learn to interpret each event objectively. Focus on what you can learn from it so you can apply them moving forward.

Keep developing yourself. Equip yourself with a huge breadth of knowledge. Learn different skills, pick up different hobbies, study different fields.

Keep upgrading yourself. Equip yourself with a huge depth of knowledge. While you can usually only level up to 99 in video games, in real life you can level up to infinity. Go for further studies if need be. Develop your skills. Level up. Build your >10,000 hours in each skill.

Try new things. What’s something you’d normally not do? Get out of your comfort zone try something different. It can be something simple like taking a new bus route, trying a new food item, picking up a new hobby, or something bigger like studying a different field, picking a new skill, traveling to a country you’ll never visit, etc. You set your own limits.

Get yourself out there. This applies for everything. (a) Get out there geographically. Go out, travel and explore the world. Set sail into the sea. Go backpacking by yourself and visit as many countries as possible. Get on a road trip and visit the different places that come out. (B) Get out there situationally. Stop sticking to routines and comfort zones. Try something different. (c) Get out there in life. Stop watching TV and living vicariously through the TV characters. Go and live the life of your dreams.

Be the absolute best in what you do. Go for the #1 position in what you do. If you want to spend your time doing something, you might as well be the best in it. Strive for the best – you don’t deserve anything lesser than that.

Don’t settle. In the same lines as #58, don’t settle for less. Don’t settle for someone you don’t like as your partner. Don’t settle for a job you don’t like #25). Don’t settle for friends who make you feel like a lesser person (#37). Don’t settle for a weight you are unhappy with. Go for what you really want.

Stretch yourself. What are you doing now? How can you achieve more? Set bigger goals. Explore your limits and break them.

Embrace new ideas. Don’t mentally limit yourself; Let your mind be a breeding ground for new ideas. Read: 25 Brainstorming Techniques.

Image ©

Create your inspirational haven. Turn your room into a place you love. Do the same for your work desk. Get rid of things that make you unproductive. Surround it with things that inspire you and trigger you to action. Read more: How To Create An Inspiring Room

Behave as your ideal self will. All of us have an ideal vision of who we want to be. How is your ideal self like? How can you start to be that ideal self now?

Set your role models in life. With role models, you become much better than you can be by yourself. I personally am inspired by Tyra Banks (for her passion for helping women build their self-esteem and changing notions of beauty), Ivanka Trump (for her success, intellect and beauty), Donald Trump (for his success and drive in life), Oprah (for being who she is), Lady Gaga (for her talent and not being afraid to be different), and many more. Seeing them and what they do reminds me of what I can be and what I can do, so they drive me on to greater heights.

Get mentors and/or coaches. There’s no faster way to improve than to have someone work with you on your goals. Not only will they drive you to achieve more for yourself, they’ll also share with you important advice which you can use to create even more success for yourself. Many of my clients approach me to coach them and the net result: they achieve significantly more progress and results in their life than if they had worked alone.

Uncover your blind spots. The more you uncover, the more you grow, the better you become.

Increase your consciousness. The more conscious you are, the more evolved you become.

Ask for feedback. As much as we try to uncover our blind spots (#66), there will be areas we cannot identify. Asking for feedback gives us an additional perspective. Some people to approach will be friends, family, colleagues, boss, or even acquaintances, since they will have no preset bias and can give their feedback objectively.

Generate passive income. Create passive income streams so your income is not tied to the time you spend on your work. Of course you’ll still continue to work, but only because you want to and not because you have to.

Help others live their best lives. There is no better way to grow than to help others grow. Ultimately, the world is one. We are all in this together.

Get married / Start your family / Have kids!

Improve the world. There are many things in the world that needs your attention and help. Poverty. Disaster recovery. Illiteracy. Children in need. Depleting rainforests. Animal rescue. Endangered species. How can you do your part?

Spearhead a humanitarian cause/organization you are passionate about.

Give more value than you receive. There is so much unspeakable joy that comes from giving. And when you keep giving, you’ll find that you actually receive a lot more in return, in spades.

Be big picture focus. You can either set your eyes on the big things or get hung up by the nitty gritty details. The former will help you get a lot more out of life than the latter. Focus on the big rocks in life and put first things first (Quadrant 2 tasks). Practice the 80/20 rule – focus on the 20% things that give you the 80% fulfillment in life.

Be clear of your end objective. What is the end goal you seek? Is what you’re doing bringing you there? If not, put it aside. As long as you keep taking on things that meets your end goal, you’ll eventually reach there.

Go the 80/20 route. For every goal you have, there are different paths to achieve it. Pick out the 80/20 path, i.e. the most effective path that brings you there the fastest with least amount of effort.

Prioritize (80/20 actions). As you embark on the 80/20 path for your goals, focus on the important tasks and cut out the less important ones. That means do the 20% actions that give you the 80% results.

Live in the moment. Are your thoughts wandering around all the time? Calm your mind down. Be present. The only time you’re ever living is in this moment. Meditation helps to remove mental clutter.

Relish in the little moments. Snuggling under warm covers on a rainy day. Ice cream on a hot day. A kiss with your loved one. Being with your best friend. A walk by the park. The breeze on your face. Quiet, alone time. Watching the sun rise/set. Soak in all these little moments of life. They are what make up your life.

Take a break. Being the best also requires you to take breaks when needed. Make sure you rest when needed. Doing so lets you walk the longer mile ahead.

Stop wanting things a certain way. I wrote a 3-part series before on the downsides of perfectionism and how to overcome them. Be firm on your end goals and your ideals, but let go of the fixation that things have to be a certain way. You’ll realize it’s by doing that that you achieve what you want.

Image ©

Focus on creation.

Don’t criticize or judge others. Respect others for who they are.

The only person you can change is yourself. Stop expecting others to behave in a certain way. Rather than demand that others around you change, focus on changing yourself. You’ll be happier and live a more fulfilling life this way.

Embrace gratitude. Be grateful for everything you have today, and everything you will get in the future.

Express gratitude. Let the people who’ve touched you know of your gratitude towards them. You’ll be surprised what a little act like this can do. If you don’t tell them, they’ll never know.

Let loose and have fun. Sing at the top of your lungs. Dance in the rain . Run barefoot and feel the ground underneath your feet. Release of your self-imposed shackles and be free .

Get into nature. Many of us live in concrete jungles. Soak in the beauty of nature.

You have a choice. Recognize you always have a choice in how to live your life.

Laugh more . Are you reading this with a straight face? Smile and have fun .

Embrace change. The only thing that’s constant is change. Change means growth. Rather than resist change, learn to versatile such that you can make the best out of the changes that come. In fact, become an agent of change.

Be more risk-inclined. Don’t be afraid to take risks. The bigger your risks, the bigger your return.

Embrace mistakes. The more mistakes you make, the faster you learn. Make sure to draw lessons so you can build on them. (#53)

Embrace disappointments. Many people try to avoid feeling disappointed. They develop a resistant relationship with disappointment. However, disappointment is part and parcel of being human – it reflects your real passions. Don’t resist it – instead, embrace it. Understand it, then channel into it to create more in life. Read: How To Overcome Disappointment (4-part series)

Image ©

Challenge your fears. All of us have fears. Fear of uncertainty, fear of public speaking, fear of risk… All our fears keep us in the same position and prevent us from growing. Rather than avoid your fears, recognize they are the compass for growth. Address and overcome them. Read: How To Overcome Fear (3-Part Series).

Maximize your mind, body, heart and soul. Living your best life requires you to maximize yourself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. If you’re highly successful, very materially abundant, have a big circle of friends, very spiritually aware but you neglect your physical health, that’s not living your life to the fullest. The same for other scenarios where a part of you is blocked off. Maximize all 4 aspects of you.

Be your best self. Essentially all the articles here at The Personal Excellence Blog are about being your best self and achieving your highest potential. It’s only through being the best we can be that we live our life to the fullest. This is why the motto of the site is “Be your best self, Live your best life“.

Love yourself. You are the person you have to live with for the rest with your life. Treasure and love yourself.

Love others. Be grateful for all the people around you because they help you to grow. They enrich your life experience. Without them, your life would not have been the same.

Last but not least: Love life. I always find living to be a fascinating experience. How we’re all on earth, with millions of species, 30,000 different life forms, over 7 billion people, and all thriving in its own way, existing, co-existing and in co-creation mode. There’s so much we don’t know out there, so much to be experienced in life, that it’s just wonderful.

Hi Melanie, thanks for your question. First off, I want to congratulate you for moving past the negative place in your life. It takes tenacity and strength to move past a negative stage in life, and you’ve successfully done so. You should feel proud about yourself.

A common question many of us ask ourselves is this – How do I get from where I am to where I want to be if there is nothing to build on in the first place?

For example, you want to start a business, but you have no experience in business development. You want to shift to a different career field, but you don’t have knowledge in the area. You want to be the top in what you do but you have no know-how. You want to let go of your past and start on a new journey, but there is nothing for you to start off with. It’s like a catch 22 situation. Like a potter who needs his tools and clay, you can’t create something if there is nothing. And if you can’t create something, you can’t get anything.

If you have ever felt this way about your goals, there are a few points which I want to share with you.

Everyone Starts From Nothing

The first thing I want to point out is that everyone starts from nothing. Rich people, poor people, successful people, non-successful people, top achievers, non-achievers – all these people start from a place where they had nothing. Forget about family background, because these aren’t determinants of success – there are as many successful people in this world from poor families as there are from rich families. Let’s focus on one’s personal achievements and knowledge, because these are arguably what one uses to build future success.

I remember when I was in secondary school, there was a group of PRC students who joined us in the upper secondary years. The school principal invited them over to study as part of a movement to attract foreign talents. These PRC students were brilliant, particularly in Maths and Chinese. They would easily ace every single Math and Chinese test and cream the local students, without having to study. Over time teachers and students just took it as a given that they were the gods of Maths and Chinese, that they were born this way, and it was impossible to ever beat them.

Yet if you were to break down their strong standing in the subjects, it was apparent that their knowledge of Maths and Chinese came from somewhere – specifically (1) their previous school, where their syllabus was a whole lot more advanced than our local syllabus, and (2) years of conditioning in a Chinese environment. And before they attended their previous school and before they were brought up in China, right when they were tiny little babies born into this world, would they know anything about differential equations, binomial theorems, partial fractions or Chinese poetry? No, they wouldn’t. And if you repeat this exercise with any single person in the world, rich or successful, you’ll end up with the same finding – they all started with no knowledge of anything. Whether you are Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Tony Robbins, George Clooney or Brad Pitt, there was a point in the past when you knew absolutely nothing about your craft and you had to learn from scratch.

Suddenly, it doesn’t matter what others have or don’t have. Because everyone starts from a place of nothing. Everything is acquired through time, whether through formal or informal education, environmental reinforcement, etc. Regardless of whether you have something or nothing now, as long as you take the steps to put the pieces in place, you will get to where you want to be.

You Have Something

The second point I want to make is to invite you to rethink the whole notion that you have nothing. Because every time you think you have nothing, it’s likely the opposite. It’s the whole proverbial notion of whether the glass is half-empty or half-full. There is always something there. The pessimist sees the glass as half empty; the optimist sees the glass as half full. Have you ever considered that the glass has always been all full though? The bottom half is filled with water, and the top half is filled with air.

If you don’t see what you have today as something, that’s because you’ve been living in your own reality for too long, to the point where you take what you have for granted. You’ve developed a mental blindness to the value of what you have. It’s a matter of retuning yourself to recognize those things you have.

Try mentally swapping positions with someone who is in an objectively worse-off situation than you. It can be someone who just got robbed, someone who just got retrenched, a jail convict sentenced for life behind bars, a patient suffering from a terminal illness with a month to live, a vegetable, a person with anterograde amnesia, a starving beggar with no home to go to, a bankrupt, someone with heavy debt to clear, a famine stricken child in Africa, etc – the possibilities are endless. How would you feel? What would you become? How would life be like compared to what you have now?

Suddenly, it’s apparent that there are so many things in your life you didn’t realize. All the things you have from before that you saw as nothing suddenly became something. Things like your 5 senses, your health, your freedom, your livelihood, your rights, your friends, your family, your knowledge, your skill sets, your abilities, your intellect, and many more. All these are real things, real tools to your possessions. They are assets beyond any doubt. There are many people who wish they have these, yet they don’t. Realize it or not, you are in a better off place than many people in this world. And focusing on the things that you do have now and making the best out of them are surer ways to move you forward in life than not recognizing them.

Your Problems Are Somethings Too

In fact, everything you have in your life now are all somethings. Including your problems, contrary to what many would think. I know many of you might be thinking – “How can my problems be of value? They weigh me down. I wish I can get rid of all my life problems It’s weighing me down. I wish I can get rid of immediately.”

There was something I read in Think and Grow Rich 2 years ago which I want to share with you. Many people always see their problems as liabilities, and things they have as assets. However, have you ever realized your problems are actually your assets too – in fact, bigger assets than you realize? Because for every problem you face, hundred thousands of people around the world are probably facing it too. And if your problem is so huge that it’s weighing on you, imagine how many other people would want to know the solution to this problem. Who is a better person to discover the solution than you, the person who is in the middle of it all?

Once you find the solution, imagine how invaluable this solution will be to others who have the same problem. It’s a huge asset! Your problems are really your assets in disguise. They are your hidden gold mines waiting to be mined and converted into gold. In fact, you should be grateful you have such problems because they are your keys to abundance. It’s with these problems that you become a richer person (not just in physical wealth, but also emotionally, mentally and spiritually).

I was brought up in a family where money was not abundant. I wouldn’t exactly say my family was poor, but we were not well-off. Working class would be an appropriate classification. Since young, we lived in regular HDB flats and didn’t own any cars (Cars are considered a luxury item in Singapore, unlike the States where it is a staple). My parents worked very hard to put me and my brother through education. (That said, they dote on me a lot – They almost always bought me everything that I wanted too, so I never felt like I was in lack or anything like that.) When I was a young kid, I had classmates whose parents were very well off. They lived in bungalows, semi-detached, etc and many of them had cars. At that time, I wondered why my family was not as rich as others’. I wished my family was more well off.

Then one day, I came across this quote, along the lines of “Those who are rich will never know how expensive it is to be poor”. It was then that I realized that it was a blessing that I was where I was, because I could never appreciate wealth (of any kind) the same way if I already had it to begin with. That was one of the times when I had a paradigm shift about my reality. I’m not saying that others who are already born materially rich can’t appreciate their wealth, but they would never do so the same way compared to if they never had it in the beginning (this is the same for every other situation in life too). It’s from a place of lack that you truly appreciate something when you get it. It’s also from your problems that you grow and become better, just like how your disappointments make you a stronger person.

And Then There Is Something Else

And then even beyond your problems/liabilities, assets/possessions, knowledge, abilities, skill sets, there is something else that you have. Even if you have nothing to your name, even if you’ve been declared bankrupt, even if you’re in $100 million dollars in debt, even if everyone has left you in this world, even if you are to lose your job/status/knowledge/achievements, even if your life has been decimated, you still have something.

You have you.

And that, I’m telling you, is the most powerful thing you can ever have in your entire life. It’s the one thing you ever need in your entire life to create the life you want. Because you have more power in you to create than anything else in the world that you can acquire. It doesn’t matter whether you are $100 million dollars in debt; you have the ability to reverse it and earn more. (Which was exactly what Donald Trump did – He was $0.9 billion dollars in debt in the 1990s and reversed that in a year, to emerge a billionaire with $3b in net worth – 3 times richer than his highest point of wealth before his debt.) It doesn’t matter if you have no friends now to speak of; you have the ability to get out there and make new friends. It doesn’t matter if you have nothing now, because you can get out there and create something for yourself. Whatever static object/asset you can acquire is nothing in comparison with you – the dynamic being who is able to create, synthesize thoughts, break down problems, form solutions, build structures, move mountains, and more.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the answers now, because you have the eternal connection with your subconsciousness, which has all the answers you need. You also have the unlimited potential and capacity to do whatever you want.

When I started this blog in Dec ’08 (less than 2 years ago), I had nothing (so to speak). I had quit my job, I had no income; I was a nobody as far as the personal development world was concerned, I had no domains, no websites, no hosting, I had no idea what Twitter was or any of the jazzy Web 2.0 social media for that matter, no knowledge of the workings of the blogosphere; I had no experience in creating a personal development blog and I had never written a personal development article in my entire life. I had never done life coaching, didn’t know what life coaching was; I had never trained before, I had never spoken in a workshop or seminar; I never read personal development books nor had interest in them; I had no idea who was who in the personal development circle/community nor was I in the loop of happenings in the area.

Yet did it matter? No, it didn’t. All these were absolutely irrelevant in whether I was going to achieve my dreams. The point was that this was (and is) my passion; This was my dream. I knew that as long as I put my whole self into achieving the goal, I would achieve the goal. It didn’t matter what I had or what I didn’t have. If there was something I had that could help to achieve the goal – then great, I would leverage on it to achieve the goal. If there was nothing, then sure, I would just figure out how to get it, or if it wass not possible to get it – create it myself. Everything else was just riff-raff, peripheral nothings that played no role whatsoever in the outcome (achieving my dreams). And while everyone was expressing fear about my situation and how it was risky and what not, these were more like noise to my ears. Their fears were more projections of themselves than of my situation. In my mind, it was starkly clear. The outcome was fixed. The question was merely how to get there.

Today after less than 2 years, TPEBlog has over 200k page views/month, is one of the top 25 personal development blogs in the world (by subscriber base) with over 7,000 subscribers – and we’re growing stronger every day. I have received nearly 20 media coverages in over 10 prominent media/press outlets, including CNN, Asia One, Today and 938 Live Radio. I’m a personal coach to very smart and talented people from different walks of life, whether in their 20s, 30s, 40s or teens, helping them to achieve success in their lives. My posts have been featured in the biggest personal development blogs online, including Lifehack.org, DumbLittleMan and Zen Habits (top 25 blogs in the world as rated by Time Magazine). Last month I just launched The Personal Excellence Book, exceeding pre-sales in just the 1st hour. (If you haven’t gotten the book, you really should – Check out this honest, in-depth review by reader Bailey who shares how he boosted his business revenue by 30% in just 2 weeks after he bought the book). I have bigger goals for TPEB/TSOPE in the next few years to come, and I’m excited to see them unfold.

Did it matter whether I had something or nothing in the beginning? No, it didn’t. Again, it’s irrelevant. Whatever it is that you have or don’t have now doesn’t matter. The outcome is fixed. Having something or nothing only affects how and what needs to be done to achieve your desired end outcome, but not the end outcome itself.

Focus on What You Want, not What You Have Now

If we always base our decisions on what we have or don’t have in this moment, we’re never going to get far. Because we’re limiting ourselves based on our history. You become a function of your past. You become a shadow of your past. That’s just surrendering yourself to what you had in the past, which is a very disempowering way to live. It merely serves to reinforce the status quo. Your current state is not a determinant of who you can be or what you can have. Remember, you have unlimited power in you. Focus on your WHAT, not your HOW.

Now if you instead, focus on what you want, what you really want, that’s a whole lot more empowering manner to live. What do you want in your life? Identify what you want, figure out your strategy and your plan, then get there. My personal 5-step ESPER goal achievement series will help. When you’re inspired by a vision that drives you, you reach that goal no matter what. Your obstacles are only what you see when you take your eyes off your goal. Pick the skills, learn them, put in your 10,000 hours and more, and you’ll be there faster than you realize.

Everyone starts from somewhere. It doesn’t matter what you have or don’t have now. It’s more important that you get clear on what you want and move towards there.

The interesting thing is, when you start doing that, you’ll realize you had a lot of things all along. All of a sudden, the past skillsets that you acquired comes in handy. Your past knowledge becomes applicable. People you knew before fall into place one way or another to aid you. And even if you don’t, as I mentioned earlier, it’s a matter of creating the connections to drive you forward.

All the best in achieving your goals and dreams and let me know how it goes .
